I went to see another garden where a newly-built conservatory had created an awkward area surrounding it. A very common situation. The reason is a paradox. When deciding on the conservatory, this area outside is not thought about except in terms of outside dimensions. Equally, I have found it common that the inside is not thought about in terms of position of furniture and doors linking to the outside. Obviously, the size is vaguely determined until the cost brings the imagined dimensions into sharp focus. Consequentially, the conservatory is built and then the resulting problems are apparent.

One factor in this is that the conservatory builder is not thinking about the garden when the planning is in full thrust – and why should he? I can’t built conservatories!

Maybe a collaboration between client, conservatory company and a garden designer (me!) is called for to make sure that the conservatory and the surrounding garden are harmonious.
